Super Pycnogenol Flavonoid (acts like a super antioxidant) Supplements
- Pycnogenol or Bio Pycnogenol
- California Gold Nutrition, French Maritime Pine Bark Extract, Oligopin
- NOW Foods, Pine Bark Extract
Pycnogenol is a strong flavonoid, has anti-inflammatory properties, protects and regenerates collagen, elastin as well as hyaluronic acid, relaxes the vessels, prevents blood clots and lowers blood sugar.
The super antioxidant was first introduced and patented as Pycnogenol. More than 40 years of research. Another form is a Generic French Maritime Pine Bark Extract. Pycnogenol was originally intended as a medicine but they found out that they could make more money by having it as a “natural medicine”. This is because it is difficult for doctors to prescribe it. Firstly, because it is versatile. Secondly, it will require more studies. Thirdly, because who created Pycnogenol wanted it readily available on the market and not limited for an limited audience.
“In addition, it has been strongly proven beneficial in reducing ageing by preventing free radical generations” https://www.longdom.org/…
“For example, a 6-week PYC intervention (150 mg/day) in healthy adults resulted in a significant increase in plasma oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), a biomarker of antioxidant activity ” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6619435/
Benefits
1: Diabetes – Improves the condition of diabetes
Firstly, Diabetes is defined as “A fasting blood sugar level of 99 mg/dL or lower is normal, 100 to 125 mg/dL indicates you have prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL or higher indicates you have diabetes.” www.cdc.gov/diabetes/basics/getting-tested.html
Secondly, Pycnogenol helps lower the fasting blood sugar level. It can also act as a therapeutic target on the disease. See the following two studies.
1: Pycnogenol® supplementation improves health risk factors in subjects with metabolic syndrome – “6 month supplementation with Pycnogenol®”
“Pycnogenol lowered fasting glucose from baseline 123 ± 8.6 mg/dl to 106.4 ± 5.3 after 3 months and to 105.3 ± 2.5 at the end of the study”.
2: French maritime pine bark extract Pycnogenol dose-dependently lowers glucose in type 2 diabetic patients
Pycnogenol lowers blood sugar but does not increase insulin sensitivity. May be a therapeutic target for blood sugar in this disease. In a different trial with 30 people that had type 2 diabetes they came to the conclusion that the most effective blood sugar-lowering dose was 200 mg/day – higher doses was not necessary. I came to the conclusion that Pycnogenol is a complement to medicine and better than available medicine at lowering blood sugar levels.
2: Blood Pressure – Therapeutic properties
It is difficult to lower blood pressure but Pycnogenol may have therapeutic properties that prevent that condition from occurring. Medicine and other super antioxidants are the way to go here. Also regular vitamins will help.
It’s always a good idea to also eat a balanced diet.
“Pycnogenol dose-dependently decreased systolic blood pressure after intravenous injection.” Effects of Melatonin and Pycnogenol on Small Artery Structure and Function in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats
3: Metabolic Syndrome
It has therapeutic properties on metabolic syndrome. In a trial with 132 people the study authors found that it lowered triglyceride levels and increased the good cholesterol HDL.
Pycnogenol® supplementation improves health risk factors in subjects with metabolic syndrome – “6 month supplementation with Pycnogenol®”
“In the 6-month study Pycnogenol® supplementation 150 mg/day decreased waist circumference, TG levels, blood pressure and increased the HDL cholesterol levels in subjects.”
4: Atherosclerosis
According to a published studie in nature.com Pycnogenol® shrinks atherosclerosis. See the below studie. Current medicines cannot remove or reduce atherosclerosis. I suggest that a super antioxidant should be used here instead.
“Here PYC treatment reduced areas of plaque and lipid deposition in atherosclerotic mice, concomitant with decreases in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels and increases in HDL cholesterol levels, indicating a potential antiatherosclerotic effect of PYC through the regulation of lipid levels. https://www.nature.com/articles/emm201574
4.1: Blood vessels and Heart
Pycnogenol improves blood flow through blood vessels and heart. I suggest Pycnogenol® would be used instead of medicine in this regards. If the blood vessels constrict less, there is an increased risk of atherosclerosis as the result is that it gets stuck to the blood vessels. This also leads to inflammation. Fortunately, Pycnogenol can be used to counteract or limit both. Here is a study.
“Pycnogenol treatment was associated with an improvement of FMD from 5.3 ± 2.6 to 7.0 ± 3.1 (P < 0.0001), while no change was observed with placebo (5.4 ± 2.4 to 4.7 ± 2.0; P = 0.051). This difference between study groups was significant [estimated treatment effect 2.75; 95% c9” […] “Conclusion: This study provides the first evidence that the antioxidant Pycnogenol improves endothelial function in patients with CAD by reducing oxidative stress.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22240497/
5: Thrombotic blood clotting disorder
Pycnogenol effectively inhibited blood clots from forming. This is why I recommend pycnogenol as an important substances to counteract blood clots.
“Symptoms were more effectively reduced with the combination of Pycnogenol® and compression stockings than with the individual regimen alone (P<0.05). Limb volume and ankle circumference were likewise more effectively reduced with Pycnogenol® plus stockings than with compression stockings alone after six months.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22108473/
6: Skin
In several studies, Pycnogenol has been shown to increase the elasticity of the skin, this by increasing collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin. Take the following two studies. I suggest your skin can look a little bit younger with Pycnogenol and you also probably get anti aging effects on the whole body. All small streams small. This will probably make you live longer.
“Pycnogenol significantly improved hydration and elasticity of skin” […] “The skin-physiological improvement was accompanied by a significant increase in the mRNA expression of hyaluronic acid synthase-1 (HAS-1), an enzyme critically involved in the synthesis of hyaluronic acid, and a noticeable increase in gene expression involved in collagen de novo synthesis.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22270036/
“Pycnogenol® intake improved (iv) viscoelastic skin properties such as gross elasticity and elastic recovery irrespective of the season. These beneficial effects were not observed if the same subjects were supplemented with placebo.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33789311/
7: Exercise Performance and Recovery
According to the following study via a press release Pycnogenol improves fitness and muscle recovery.
“Supplementation with renowned pine bark extract shown effective in boosting muscle performance, increasing endurance and reducing cramping by controlling oxidative stress” https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/study-shows-pycnogenol-improves-fitness-and-muscle-recovery-240292841.html
8: Osteoarthritis
Here too, as in most other diseases, Pycnogenol helps considerably. According to the study below, the joints become more flexible and the pain was relieved. In this case with mild Osteoarthritis. This can probably be scaled up for those who have a more severe osteoarthritis. The good news is that it seems to help a lot.
”Pycnogenol as an anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective add-on supplement provided long-lasting positive effects such as enhanced physical mobility and pain relief for patients with mild OA.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5775113/ Journal Of Medical Food
9: Restless legs syndrome
According to a new study, Pycnogenol makes you less restless if you have Restless legs syndrome. Take this new studie for example:
“The venoarteriolar response – affected at inclusion in all subjects with RLS – was improved with the supplement, indicating a better axon-axon reflex response and a lower level of subclinical neural alteration.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35815767/
10: ADHD, Glutathione and NRF2
Increases the most powerful antioxidant glutathione in children with ADHD. We can then also conclude that it does so in everyone who takes it. Therefore, it should also activate NRF2, which it does according to two studies. Here is a quote from the study on children with ADHD:
“One month of Pycnogenol administration (1 mg/kg body weight/day) caused a significant decrease in GSSG and a highly significant increase in GSH levels as well as improvement of GSH/GSSG ratio in comparison to a group of patients taking a placebo” […] “Pycnogenol administration normalizes TAS of ADHD children.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16984739/
11: Cancer
Pycnogenol can prevent cancer from occuring so it is very effective. Take this study as an example.
“Pycnogenol can inhibit PKC and telomerase in cancer cells for life-span reduction. Furthermore, by reducing NFκB activation, VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 can prevent cancer.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8234227/
12: Inflammation
Pycnogenol reduces inflammation markers and thus inflammation in the body. The same is a cancer driver so if you take Pycnogenol your chance of getting cancer is reduced. This happens in multiple ways, see 11: Cancer.
”A recent study published in International Immunopharmacology, reveals why Pycnogenol® (pic-noj-en-all)” […] ” is effective for reducing inflammation and soothing pain associated with various health problems.” […] ”found that Pycnogenol® inhibits the generation of COX-2 and 5-LOX, two naturally occurring enzymes associated with a host of inflammatory conditions.” https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/549738
”Pycnogenol seems to help with asthma and allergies. Early research shows that taking it at least 5 weeks before the start of allergy season seems to lessen symptoms.
In a small/preliminary study of kids with asthma, pycnogenol helped improve symptoms. It also lessened the amount of asthma medication they needed.” https://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/pycogenol-uses-and-risks
13: Asthma
The amount of asthma medication was reduced by participants in one study when they used pycnogenol. It also helps with allergies.
”Pycnogenol seems to help with asthma and allergies. 14: Prevents liver damages
In rats with liver damage, the same was reduced by Pycnogenol
”The results of this study showed a significant decrease in liver damage in the group using Pycnogenol. In the immunohistochemical examination, it was observed that the free oxygen radicals decreased but the difference was not significant.” https://e-century.us/files/ijcem/13/11/ijcem0114238.pdf
”Pycnogenol treatment significantly decreased the liver triglyceride and serum alanine amino transferase levels” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22294490/
15: Mood
Pycnogenol helps the brain to stabilize mood, improving memory, attention as well as decision-making. Should be investigated more if it has antipsychotic effect and effect on ADHD. I propose Pycnogenol should be used instead of medication.
”What is unique about this study is that it observes how Pycnogenol® can positively impact mood as participants reported feeling less anxiety and a stronger sense of content. That may be connected back to the mental performance boost and demonstrates the effects of dramatic reduction of oxidative stress,” said physician and nutritional medicine expert Dr. Fred Pescatore.” https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/study-shows-daily-use-of-pycnogenol-can-improve-memory-focus-decision-making-and-mood-300023604.html
16: Alzheimer’s
Pycnogenol improves memory and slows the progression of plaque formation. I vote for Pycnogenol to be used in healthcare as the main medicine, in this case herbal medicine.
”French maritime pine bark treatment decelerates plaque development and improves spatial memory in Alzheimer’s disease mice” […] ”Pycnogenol significantly decreased the number of plaques in both treatment paradigms but did not alter levels of soluble Aß or the gene expression of APP-processing enzymes. Behavioural testing revealed an improvement of the spatial memory” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30668321/
17: Immunity
Pycnogenol improves the immune system and I believe it can improve the defence of COVID and other virus by the immune system
”Pyc supplementation led to increased T and B cell response against mitogens and recovery of an abnormal shift of cytokine pattern designated by the decreased secretion of Th1 cytokine and increased secretion of Th2 cytokine.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4198966/
18: Memory
Improves memory significantly. See the following studie:
”Considering the cognitive test battery (PASAT, pattern recognition memory, spatial recognition memory, spatial working memory), Pycnogenol® subjects showed a small but significant improvement with spatial recognition memory unchanged” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24675223/
19: Allergies
It can be a complement to antihistamines and should be used in healthcare as a secondary medicine for this type of condition.
“Pycnogenol is anti-inflammatory and prevents the secretion of histamine – a body-specific substance that causes allergic symptoms such as hay fever.” https://cancerochallergifonden.se/pycnogenol/
